Courmayeur:
Dolonne
Dolonne
is a small village that, although actually part of Courmayeur, is
also a separate entity. The small gondola from here is a perfect
entry point to the skiing at Plan Checrouit and the rest of the
mountain. Indeed some lucky souls are fortunate enough to have the
gondola leaving directly from their hotel.
Note:
The first sentence needs more explanation – how can
Dolonne be part of Courmayeur and not part of it??
Except
for a small beginner's area, there is no skiing in Dolonne, unless
you want to count the lower regions of the Arp, which in fact ends
at the trees just above Dolonne.

This
village has a selection of hotels and restaurants, some nightlife,
and is the location of a splendid new sports center. This, by the
way, is one of the best in the Alps. It features tennis, squash,
fitness, and ice-skating, just to mention some of the benefits. No
swimming pool though. For that you have to go to one of the hotels
with a pool, or to Pre St. Didier, 4 kms. down the road.
Courmayeur
is about a fifteen-minute walk from Dolonne should you want to get
into town for shopping or some of the village's nightlife. Getting
back can be tricky though, as late night public transport can be
thin on the ground in the late evening. |
Overall,
though, Dolonne is a good bet for most of the action in and around
Courmayeur, and if skiing is your main goal, and if you like a
small, quiet village atmosphere, you'll be happy here.
