The Arp, one
of the most testing ski runs in Courmayeur
The
Cresta D'Arp pictured here is a rich treat in high mountain
skiing. It is not for everybody though, and certainly not for the
faint hearted, those lacking in skill, confidence, or experience,
and definitely not for those who are unfit.
Why?
Mainly, because it is a 12 km. or so unprepared and unparallel
off-piste mountain trail.
It
is difficult in some sections due to a fairly steep pitch and in
other sections because of the extreme narrowness of the trail. It
is often made more taxing by the varying snow conditions you will
encounter on your way down. This can range from snowdrifts, to
breakable crust, to ice, to bare patches. An accident here can
lead to rescue delays and huge expense.
OK? That's the bad news
was
is that, if you are up to it, Courmayeur is a dynamite run. One of the special challenges for
good skiers is to experience all of the above, and at the same time enjoy a bonanza of
mountain scenery. This is the place, all right.
It
is recommended that you ski this run in the morning, as a full day of high altitude sunshine
beating on the snow can really change conditions. Besides, your stamina is greater in the
morning. At least that's the theory.
One
reaches this run by taking the Youla cable car, and then on to 2900 meters or so by riding the
Arp cable car to the Crest. Hence the name, Cresta D' Arp.
By
the way, there are no restaurants or "pit stops" on the way down. If you get thirsty
or hungry, you had better have provisions with you. Otherwise, don't eat the yellow snow.
