The Hotel Dolonne, Courmayeur, Aosta, Italy
I clearly recall the first time I had dinner at the restaurant in the Hotel Dolonne in the medieval village of Dolonne in Courmayeur. It was with my French friend Allain and his friend Jacqui (Swiss) to celebrate his appointment to as a pilot with Air France. This came after much training and years as a helicopter pilot.
I remember the dinner fondly; almost as much for the location as for the success and happiness as my friends. Although many years have passed, Alain still flies for Air France and the Hotel Dolonne keeps making clients feel good both in the restaurant and in the stylish 3-star hotel.
Let’s clarify here. Dolonne is a satellite village of Courmayeur; not in the town center to be sure, but not so far from it either. It is, in fact, the perfect solution if the normal winter sports (indeed year round) holiday hustle, bustle and posing is not your cup of tea.
Enter Dolonne and the Hotel that bears the
village name. Just scant minutes by car and about 15 by foot from
the center of Courmayeur, the Hotel Dolonne works hard to epitomize
the culture and history of the village. And why not? After all this
old, fortified house has a particular architectural value when it
comes to relating the history of this old village. The photo above
will quickly tell the story. With just 32 rooms what The Dolonne
lacks in size it makes up for in amenities and comfort. The
hotel’s restaurant is open to the public. If you are lucky enough to
be staying there, you can expect a surprising mixture of comfort and
facilities combined with a strict adherence to history.
