Courmayeur, Mer Du Glace

Except for the beginning of the run to the Vallee Blanche, which is at its best in late winter to early spring, this area is reserved almost exclusively for summer activities.

One of those used to be skiing, but to our knowledge that has been discontinued in recent years.Just in case it gets to be reinstated during the life of this map, we can tell you that it is a relatively small summer ski area serviced by two poma lifts. None the less it serves the purpose for those who want to get in some slalom training or simply cannot wait for the delights of winter.

On the Zoom here you can clearly see the gondola which carries people from Chamonix to Helbronner and back. Just as a day's outing this is a treat, and it also provides a marvelous opportunity to see the greatness of the glacier close up, but without the difficulties and danger.

If you arrive in Chamonix by skis via the Vallee Blanche either have a pre arranged ride back to Courmayeur or go to the train station and get a bus back. Best to check times beforehand.

It is often difficult to figure out just how long your Vallee Blanche decent to Chamonix will take. A lot depends upon the speed of the slowest skier in your group, and the quality of the snow at lower altitudes. If that is scarce, then a walk for the last few kilometers might be necessary. Best to leave early.

In summer your journey to Chamonix will also include a ride down the famed Aiguille Du Midi cable car. This car, sometimes referred to as the "eighth wonder of the world" is indeed a memory, and highly recommended.
